Happiness. Such a simple yet delicate and tricky word. If I ask you, “Are you happy right now?” I wonder how fast you can answer me. Will it be right away or would you ask me to give you at least 3 minutes to think about it first? That’s why I say it’s tricky. Sometimes, we find it challenging to answer such questions as we tend to think about what we really feel inside. I know you understand where I’m coming from.

Day by day, we do our best to live life to the fullest. Not all, but still most of us. That, I’m pretty sure of. Day by day our feelings and emotions vary depending on how each day treats us. It’s inevitable, do you think? But obviously, we can do something about it. Here are some ways I can think of to live a happy life.

Leave the past in the past.
Yes, leave it there. Whether they are joyous moments of your life or depressing ones, leave them all behind. Remember, you are the very own author of your “book of life”. Once the next chapter ends, turn to the next one and create a more beautiful piece. Let them be a part of your memory. You don’t have to completely forget them as they can also serve as your learning experience. There will always be people involved in those memories. People whom you share your happy and sad memories with. And people who gave you heartaches. As I said, it is inevitable as it is part of our journey on this earth. You may remember them and the feelings you shared with but focus on what brings you peace of mind.

Create a routine that your mind and body enjoy.
A lot of people will surely agree with this one. Our body is composed of cells that allow us to function accordingly. It is important that we take care of ourselves not only physically but also mentally. I believe these two are the most important ones from the wellness wheel as these two serve as the foundation of the other wellness dimensions. Having a routine that your mind and body enjoy will not only give you an active body and mind but also a sound body and mind. And when I say routine, we’re talking about having enough sleep, working out, journaling, doing meditation, dancing, meeting up with friends, having good times with your family and loved ones, and so on. Those activities that you enjoy. Activities that make your body move and your mind think. Just make sure that you give yourself enough time to rest.

See the good and beauty in everything.
The world is evolving and so do we. There are a lot of new things coming up every year. From material things even up to human behaviour. Not sure about you but I notice that today’s generation is way too different from before. I’ll not put them into detail but social media plays a big part in it. Each and every one of us is different and we have our own different ways to achieve or do things. Whatever it is, let’s do our best to see the good in everything. This may be a bit challenging but once we train ourselves to see the beauty in each and every person or thing we encounter, it will surely give us a positive effect.

Know your limitations.
Boundaries. As far as I know, there’s nothing infinite in this world. People come and go. All living things die. Even non-living things deteriorate as well. As much as possible, it is important for us to set boundaries whether with people or with any other things that we do/have. In order for us to build good relationships with other people, we have to know our place. Obviously, this applies to our bodies as well. There is no way you can work for 24 hours. If there’s one, that person must be insane. Whatever your circumstance is, may it be for financial reasons or just for your own pleasure (really?), we should not push ourselves too hard. Yes, it’s good to do our best at most times, but that doesn’t mean that we have to tire ourselves out. The human body can only do so much. It is our one and only full suit that allows us to move around and do things here on earth.

Practice gratitude.
This one is, I think, the simplest and easiest of all the ways listed here. A simple “thank you” for anything that you received, shows how you value life in general. Expressing gratitude allows us to show our respect and earn that respect as well. It is how we build a community of camaraderie. There is trust and respect in each other that we do not feel the burden and we do not feel obligated to help each other. Even with the little things we see and feel around us like the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe, let’s appreciate these things as they are given to us so we can live on this earth. As I mentioned before, everything on this earth has its own limitation. Let’s not take these things for granted.

Be with nature from time to time.
As our generation is getting more and more modern and technologically advanced, setting your feet on the beach sand or to nature and feeling that wonderful fresh breeze, gives your body that ecstatic and warm feeling. The feeling may be different from one person to another, but being with nature from time to time gives me that peaceful and calming feeling.

Don’t pressure yourself too much.
Last but not least on my list is this. After giving different ways to help you live a happy life, I’ll say this – don’t pressure yourself too much. As I said at the top, happiness is a simple yet delicate and tricky word. It is elusive that sometimes when trying to achieve happiness, we often go overboard, that putting too much pressure on ourselves results in the opposite of what we’re trying to achieve. With too much pressure, we often lose focus on our goal and we overlook some steps we try to follow. Let’s do it step by step and trust in the process (as they say). With consistency and focus, living life happily wouldn’t be that hard to do. And mind you, you will able to live healthily too!
