As I am sat here in the back of my van down at Trigg beach staring out over the sea I fix my gaze upon the moon.
The moon is a big floating rock in a vast blackness that is kept relatively constant distance from Earth by gravity. It impacts our ocean’s tides and is the subject of many myths and stories. Perhaps it influences us in other less-provable ways but who am I to say they are untrue just because they can’t be proven.
With the moon in the West and the Sun rising in the East I know that the moon is illuminated by the rising sun. The direction and the angle that the sun is rising causes some of its light to be blocked by Earth and so only about 4/5th’s of the Earth-facing part of the moon is visible.
This is fascinating, right? Just for a moment imagine standing on the surface of the moon, looking at the dynamic-trio from an entirely different perspective.
The moon and the sun are so important for life here on Earth, and to have the universe as it is, and our most immediate space-neighbours where they are, performing the roles they do that have created life as we know it is just mind-bending.
Whether you’re a believer of an ultimate creator, or a that life is a fluke of time, elements, and temperature (which is where I lean) there still has to be a huge amount of appreciation for the fact we are here, now. For all we know we may well be the only, the first, and last seemingly “intelligent” species in all of time and space. Just let that sink in for a moment.
While I of course think it is important to preserve the human species as well as the other life we value, we should also be careful where we put our attention on a consistent basis, each day. Regular thoughts of doom, gloom and annihilation will divert our gaze away from the good, the beautiful, the miracle
We live relatively short lives and we should fill them with as much joy, appreciation and breathtaking experiences as possible. If there is nothing else that you can be grateful for, be grateful for life, and the fact that you exist when it could have been just as easy for you to not.
