Nature has been displaying various changes as humankind has evolved, becoming more industrialised and reliant on technology. Alongside this evolution, our food resources have also developed, prompting increasing awareness of how our dietary choices impact the environment. More people are transitioning to different dietary lifestyles for environmental reasons, such as omnivores, carnivores, pescatarians, vegans, and vegetarians. As a microgreens farmer advocating for sustainable living, I’ve explored eco-friendly methods for growing microgreens. Here’s why cultivating microgreens is beneficial for the planet:

Reduction of Food Chemicals: Growing microgreens organically reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and pesticides. By opting for organic farming methods, we minimise environmental harm and protect our health.

Reduction of Food Waste: Microgreens play a role in reducing food waste by providing a nutrient-dense food source that can be consumed quickly. Additionally, leftover roots and soil can be composted, supporting sustainable farming practices.

Sustainability: Microgreens farming offers a sustainable solution to food production. With various growing methods available, including soil-based, coconut coir, or hydroponics, microgreens can be cultivated in urban settings with minimal energy consumption.

While these points are based on my knowledge and experience, there are differing views on the subject. Further research and analysis are needed to fully understand the environmental impact of microgreens farming. Microgreens are more than just a culinary garnish—they are a sustainable food source that benefits both our health and the planet.
